You will then have to decide the details of the employees firing before you sit down to talk to them about it. You need to make sure that you are clear on what they have to do before they leave. Make sure that you have a list of the things that the company needs back and how much time they have to do all of this. You will be able to set boundaries and limits at this point as well so that there is no misunderstandings between the two of you.Â
You should have someone with you when you are firing an employee. This is for your protection as well as theirs. This way you will have proof of the conversation and there is nothing left to add later that is untrue. You will feel better knowing that you have someone there to support you as well. Make sure that you have all the answers to questions like severance pay and benefits. The employee will usually need to know all of this before they leave.
Do not beat around the bush. Make sure that you get to the point so that you are not stumbling around with your words. You need to take responsibility. Do not put the blame on anyone else and make sure that you are not complicating the situation with a he said she said scenario. You should also offer any type of assistance you can give to the employee.  You should help them with any questions that they may have a give them counseling or anything that they may need to move on if this is a good split.
Make sure that you are letting the other employees know after you tell the fired employee. Do not give out too many details about why they were let go just tell them that they are no longer employed there. You can be prosecuted if you are caught telling their details to other employees. You should make sure that you have documentation of the meeting in which they were fired. This will also prove to be good help for you later down the road and allow you the opportunity to prove what you said and did in the meeting.Â
When you follow some tips and keep a positive attitude, you will see that firing someone the right way does not have to be that painful. You can do it and make the right choices for your company as well as keep the peace with all of the other employees and the one that is being fired at the same time.Â
